Buntspecht\u00a0was born in 2017.\u00a0Some\u00a0band members were long-term friends, others were\u00a0new\u00a0acquaintances\u00a0formed\u00a0whilst wandering the streets of\u00a0Vienna\u00a0in the dead of\u00a0the\u00a0night.\u00a0This led to an\u00a0eclectic\u00a0cast of musicians (some of which had not\u00a0yet\u00a0handled an instrument)\u00a0all ready to make music, and more importantly,\u00a0to\u00a0have\u00a0fun doing so.<\/p>\n

A year after their inception\u00a0their debut\u00a0album\u00a0\u201cGro\u00dfteils\u00a0Kleinigkeiten\u201d\u00a0was released\u00a0in 2018. This was\u00a0followed by\u00a0their second full-length \u201cDrau\u00dfen\u00a0im Kopf\u201d in 2019.<\/p>\n

The unconventional\u00a0nature\u00a0of the band\u00a0was\u00a0reflected in their sound, with\u00a0both\u00a0the\u00a0press\u00a0and\u00a0the band themselves\u00a0often tripping up over their\u00a0own\u00a0tongues\u00a0when trying\u00a0to put it into words:\u00a0Sacral, occult, old-school\u00a0Bard pop.\u00a0Ballad Acid Chanson.\u00a0Brass band\u00a0string orchestra\/80s slap bass drum machine.\u00a0Children’s songs for adults.<\/p>\n

This\u00a0surreal yet addictive sound\u00a0wasn\u2019t\u00a0restricted to the music, but\u00a0was also evident\u00a0in the\u00a0lyrics,\u00a0with\u00a0vocalist, Lukas\u00a0Klein shaping\u00a0the German language\u00a0at his will.\u00a0He created his own abstract terms such as\u00a0the \u201cWaschmaschinentango\u201d which\u00a0was\u00a0conveniently placed on the parquet\u00a0flooring.\u00a0Whereas, in the track \u201cGuten\u00a0Tag\u201d he\u00a0dreamed\u00a0of wandering far enough\u00a0into the distance\u00a0\u201cuntil I can see myself from behind\u201d.<\/p>\n

After\u00a0two outstanding albums\u00a0Buntspecht\u2019sunpredictability remained\u00a0as they continued\u00a0to push boundaries.\u00a0Their so-called\u00a0half-album\u00a0\u201cWer\u00a0jagt\u00a0michwenn\u00a0ich\u00a0hungrig\u00a0bin\u201d\u00a0added another, rather minimalistic layer to their repertoire,\u00a0with\u00a0the tracks consisting\u00a0of\u00a0song sketches and slam\u00a0poetry\u00a0improvisations.<\/p>\n

With\u00a0Buntspecht\u2019s\u00a0current album, \u201cSpring bevor du\u00a0f\u00e4llst\u201d topping the Austrian charts\u00a0they show no sign of\u00a0waning on their mission to push their creativity to new levels. They may not know how to describe their sound, but they sure know\u00a0what they want to do with it.\u00a0The\u00a0journey\u00a0that began\u00a0on those fated nights in 2017 continues for\u00a0Buntspecht, and\u00a0more and more of us\u00a0want to get in on the fun.<\/p>\n
