Our Artist of the Month for September is the newcomer Lisl.<\/a> Lisl\u2019s real name is Lisa-Marie K\u00e4mpf and she comes from W\u00fcrzburg. When you first hear the name \u2018Lisl\u2019, you think of a snappy, Bavarian-style nickname. Then when you listen to her music, Lisl opens up her soul and world of thoughts with lyrics that are relatable for Gen Z, in a contemporary indie rock style that is popular around the world and is conquered with confidence by female artists such as Lisl.<\/p>\n

From YouTube covers to BBC Music Introducing<\/h3>\n

Our Artist of the Month Lisl has, at 23 years old, already experienced her first promising milestones as a musician. At the age of five, Lisl learned to play the keyboard at music school. Later, she learned piano and guitar. In 2014, at the age of 14, she began uploading cover songs to YouTube. You had Lisl, her delicate voice and a piano, plus an infinite number of songs by Ed Sheeran, Dodie<\/a>, Ruth B. and Pale Waves. Her covers reached several thousand people and at the time, she dreamed of writing her own songs. The recordings show how much Lisl loves music. She has no make-up on and there are no filters, glaring light or microphone on the video. Lisl just sits in her bedroom, complete with Ikea bed frame, and sings the songs of her heroes \u2013 often in the semi-dark and in an untidy room. With Lisl, everything is pure and has to be out in the open. A constant stream of cover songs made waves. In 2022 she released the song \u201cFever\u201d with her first music project, Brown Bear Collective. A performance on the renowned newcomer series \u201cBBC Music Introducing\u201d marked Lisl\u2019s first musical highlight.<\/p>\n

\"Artist<\/p>\n

Her debut EP will be released in autumn<\/h3>\n

On February 16, her debut single \u201cA Little Lost<\/a>\u201d was\u00a0born \u2013 Lisl\u2019s personal \u201cFuck You anthem\u201d on her struggle with social anxiety. \u201cGirls Like You<\/a>\u201d is the second pre-single from her debut EP, which will be released in the autumn. “Girls Like You” is about pedestals and comparisons. About putting other people, often people you like, on a pedestal and feeling small next to them.\u00a0 In the song, Lisl tells of how annoying and corrosive this can be; of how often you forget yourself and unconsciously cross your own boundaries. That the feeling of having to prove again and again that you are just as \u201ccool\u201d, can and should take up space and be loud.<\/p>\n

2024 \u2013 the year of solo anthems<\/h3>\n

As she herself says, Lisl releases indie anthems that demonstrate a touch of Phoebe Bridger<\/a>, Claud and BECKS<\/a>. Her songs are created in her room in her shared flat, where she writes most of the songs on her guitar in bed \u2013 until, according to Lisl, you find yourself:<\/p>\n

in a concert scenario with tight drums, a full bass and catchy lead guitars.<\/p>\n

Her music is a harmonious combination of a warm voice, powerful instrumentation and sensitive lyrics, which capture the thought world of Gen Z with apt words. Everything Lisl writes is blunt, direct and shows her vulnerable and private side. It is about social fears, mental health, existential and future fears, everyday struggles and her own head, which, as she herself says, “she is constantly arguing with”. She records the sometimes strong feelings and thoughts which the lyrics come from using notes and voice memos.<\/p>\n
