This represents a paradigm shift in the use of music for artificial intelligence \u2013 away from uncontrolled growth and towards remunerated and transparent systems.<\/p>\n<h3>What was the AI training conflict about?<\/h3>\n<p>In June 2024, several major labels, including UMG, SONY MG and WARNER MG, filed lawsuits against the AI music platforms <a href=\"https:\/\/suno.com\/home\">Suno<\/a> and Udio. The accusation: both companies are said to have used copyrighted audio recordings without permission to train their AI systems.<\/p>\n<p>The lawsuits claimed that Suno and Udio not only used commercial music from major labels, but also extracted <a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/suno-and-udio-hit-with-class-action-lawsuits-from-independent-artists\/?\">lyrics from databases<\/a> such as <a href=\"https:\/\/genius.com\/\">Genius<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.azlyrics.com\/\">AZLyrics<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lyrics.com\/\">Lyrics.com<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.musixmatch.com\/\">Musixmatch<\/a> \u2013 also without permission. Suno and Udio had allegedly set up internal libraries with copied audio and lyric data that employees and contractors had access to \u2013 without sufficient deletion or accounting records.<\/p>\n<p>And there were more accusations. The platforms are said to have downloaded hundreds or even thousands of songs from YouTube by circumventing protective measures.
