A Facebook page, Instagram Reels, or TikTok videos are essential for promo and for representing yourself as an artist, but to professionally present your band or yourself as an artist as a brand, you should go one step further: A professional press kit helps you get the attention of music blogs and music magazine editors and provides them with all the important information in one place. In principle, such a collection is extremely practical for everyone interested\u2014whether interview partners or a distributor\u2014as all information can be found without a long search. Better safe than sorry<\/h3>\n

In the golden age of the internet, a distinction is made between physical press kits (PPK) and electronic press kits (EPK). Electronic press kits are easy to handle and easy to update at any time. They contain all the info in file format and should be clearly named and zipped. If the size of your EPK is very large despite compression, you should upload it to a file transfer service like Dropbox and send the recipient a download link. EPKs can also be perfectly placed in the download\/press area of your website. You can find plenty of templates for electronic press kits on the internet. <\/p>\n

A physical press kit (PPK) is naturally more expensive than an EPK and involves more work, as images and texts must be printed in high quality. Additionally, a physical medium like a USB stick should be included and finally\u2014so that the whole thing doesn’t sit heavy on an editor’s stomach and end up in the trash\u2014it should be visually appealing and well-packaged: Three sheets of paper, a paperclip, a USB stick, and a brown envelope won’t stay in anyone’s memory for long. To make matters worse, a PPK then has to be sent by mail \u2013 postage costs! <\/p>\n

The advantage over an EPK, however, is that a PPK makes a higher-quality impression than an EPK (which is often or even accidentally moved straight from the inbox to the trash, gets lost among dozens of other emails, or ends up in the spam folder). Besides, music editors also “like to have something in their hands.” Ahem! <\/p>\n

Especially the editorial offices of well-known music magazines are very spoiled when it comes to the material that flies around their ears dozens to hundreds of times every day. The more lasting impression a PPK leaves compared to an EPK could, in case of doubt, be the deciding factor in whether someone takes a closer look at your music \u2013 or not. <\/p>\n

Seven steps to a professional press kit \u2013 EPK or PPK:<\/h3>\n

  • Band biography: and not just in German. An English bio is also a must. If you’re a language genius, you’re welcome to offer a third language of your choice. Pro tip: French is particularly popular. If you know you have a large circle of loyal fans in a specific country, it’s definitely a good idea to provide press info in that country’s language. In such cases, please skip Google Translate and try to have a native speaker do the translation. Keep the bio snappy. <\/li>\n
  • Demo USB stick, in professional recording quality. For the EPK, however, links to download the demo songs from a server (e.g., Dropbox or Soundcloud) are sufficient. Absolutely avoid attaching music files to emails, as oversized files frustrate recipients and can also block their inbox. <\/li>\n
  • Upload several high-quality photos\u2014ideally taken by someone who knows the genre a bit. For the physical press kit, you need the photos printed in high quality and digitally on CD \u2013 for the EPK, just digital. Name all files clearly \u2013 please never send a photo as DSCF7216.jpg! The cover of your current release should also be included in digital form and high resolution. <\/li>\n
  • Please include a complete discography with all releases in your press kit<\/li>\n
  • A list of upcoming tour dates\u2014always update it freshly when you send out a PK. Pay attention to everything. Also to the details like: date, city, venue. <\/li>\n
  • Press reviews and interviews: Wonderful if you already have something to show. Sort through them and place a handful of the most prestigious ones in your PK. In other words: A review in VISIONS beats a review in the local village gazette. A review in the local gazette beats a review in your little sister’s school newspaper, and so on. <\/li>\n
  • Info about your press contact is indispensable: address of a contact person, email address, band website, phone number, Facebook page, Instagram, TikTok, links to Soundcloud, YouTube channel, etc.<\/li>\n
  • Last but not least, some advice from mom: Pay attention to correct spelling and grammar, appealing phrasing, and in the case of a PPK, stylish packaging for the whole thing.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
