Passenger of the Month in May 2013: Milky Chance
Sincere pop music? It may well be the case that there is no such thing, but Milky Chance certainly comes damn close. He creates each song all by himself, with a lot of devotion and passion from the heart.
Surprisingly, the 20 year-old from Kassel became the focus of attention in his home town in June 2012 with his first solo release. Since then he has put more and more young people under the spell of his interesting, different-sounding songs.
If you dig down to the core of his music, you’ll find classic singer-songwriter elements. However, Milky Chance evades the usual forms of this genre thanks to a strong, very present dynamic. A dynamic not least created by the dominant guitar which he plays himself and with which you still hear its reggae origin, in spite of its long journey. In addition, backed by electronic bass and percussion, Milky Chance has created a completely new sound. A sound that manages to stand out from the usual pop crowd and yet its audience is diverse. And while you can always argue about tastes, the musical quality of these songs is obvious. As a musician who is, without a doubt, a master of his craft, Milky Chance has, in each of his songs, created a mood that captivates the listener and triggers something which many will not be able to escape from: the feeling of experiencing something special, something true.
Milky Chance has captured a certain mood of our time: all possibilities are open to everyone. A generation trying to oust their aimlessness and cling eagerly onto anything spontaneous and genuine, and do away with anything that is planned, evaluated and calculated. Perhaps he’s in the right place at the right time as an alternative for this generation which is so desperately trying to identify with something of its own, but doesn’t have the heart to make dubstep the official anthem of its era.
Milky Chance provides an opportunity to stop thinking and to start feeling and to let yourself go. Music that gets into your body and makes you want to move; it doesn’t press and doesn’t push, but helps to carry you away.
