Our Artist of the Month for December: SHOKI
Provocative, uninhibited and sex positive: SHOKI
Our Artist of the Month SHOKI has very quickly become one of the most prominent faces in the lively Berlin rap and techno underground – and that without ever showing her face. Sand am Meer is one example of a rapper who wears a mask, but a rapper and DJ with an iconic latex balaclava? Unheard of before SHOKI. And quite apart from her appearance, the rapper, originally from Berlin, manages to do something that few people manage to do – even in rap battles in 2023: to shock. If you had to describe SHOKI’s art using only three concepts, you would probably use: provocative, uninhibited and sex positive.
SHOKI mixes it up
With an ignorant flow, SHOKI raps over rattling 808 drum machine grooves, thick bass lines and elements borrowed from hyperpop, with breakbeats permeating throughout and forthrightly and explicitly about sex, white lines on scratched mobile phone displays and her everyday life in the den of iniquity. An extract from the song Landlord goes:
I don’t need an image team pulling the strings in the background
Sweet bride on ketamine, underground queen of obscene (Shoki!)
Long nights, longer noses clear away their fame with obscene tapes
Mix, white and white, will it be good? Good question
In a scene in which until now almost exclusively muscular men have expressed their often-questionable erotic fantasies, there is suddenly a dominatrix, who will “put the guys on a short leash” and who celebrates her own self-determination with sexy outfits.
As quick as anything
Instead of several singles, there were just a few months between SHOKI’s first part on her rap crew’s release, Tiefbasskommando and extraordinary guest appearances on the biggest stages in Germany. Despite her modest catalogue, SHOKI has more than 600,000 monthly listeners on Spotify. This year she even featured on Ski Aggus’ number one album “denk mal drüber nach…”. SHOKI also appeared in Domiziana’s show at the Hurricane Festival and played quite a number of impressive DJ sets — including at the sold-out Straat264 in Nürnberg and the opening of Berlin Pride with Fatboy Slim.
