Our Artist of the Month for October: Bush.ida
Recently an act at our FLINTA Force Showcase at the Reeperbahn Festival in the Mojo Café, and now our Artist of the Month.
No, our Artist of the Month for October is not a coincidence, but a twist of fate. It took the pandemic for Bush.ida, who once came from, in her own words, “a backwater in Bavaria”, to start making music. And what music she makes! More than just music, she fires political and social salvos too. Bush.ida wants to provoke and encourage thought. She does not want to be comfortable and understands the ambiguity of her art.
Through her professional experience, including as a flight attendant and sustainability science student, it became increasingly clear to her that the patriarchy is everywhere and shapes the world as we experience it. And that’s what Bush.ida wants to change.
Force of nature, firework and arsonist
No doubt her music is also her personal liberation from the patriarchy. Bush.ida has combined this with banger rap, vocal acrobatics and radical softness. Bush.ida unites rap, feminism and environmental activism. In 2023 her first EP called “WILL KOMMEN IM BUSH [Well Come to the Bush]” was released. An invitation to Bush.ida’s world as she likes it. In the first lockdown, she released her first single “VAGIDA” in December 2020. The song was a barometer of what was to follow – a manifesto of the strength of all birthing people and a refusal to continue accepting the label of “weak sex”.
Bush.ida has no interest in patriarchal structures of violence, male-dominated rap and the capitalist lifestyle that promotes individualism. She opposes this, positing radical tenderness, co-creation and collaboration as the true foundations of this world. Set the old on fire and fire up the new – together with the realisation that we are all part of the system that has shaped us. Support ambiguity is the message. And she puts this message across with eloquent lines that always prompt her listeners to look for further meanings. Through self-organised streams with the LITCLITCREW (DJ collective from Lüneburg), her message spread like wildfire and led to her first gigs, at Fusion and Breminale. At her concerts, she puts on powerful performances, which underline her words with pulsating movements.
“BUSH zu BI”
BUSH.IDA’s second EP, “BUSH zu BI [Bush to Bi]”, will be released on October 25, 2024 and will celebrate a new, juicy era of Bush.ida. This EP is a manifesto of pride in your own queerness, in the GODDESSES and the GOOD BOYS, and a further exploration of one’s own self. The focus is on lust, one’s own non-binarity and being bi. It is, of course, brimming with ambiguity. It is a fluid ping-pong of dominance and subservience, passivity and activity, inviting and repellent, cheeky and kind.
We are curious what will happen next!
