Our passenger of the month in February 2023: Tokyo Tea Room
Dream pop from Great Britain
If the music of Tokyo Tea Room were a wind, it would be a warm summer breeze that would immediately remind you of a fortnight’s holiday in summer, simply because it would be directly connected with the feeling of freedom, the most beautiful nature and the experience of the moment. The band, consisting of the four musicians Beth Plumb (vocals), Daniel Eliott (guitar & BV’s), Ben Marshall (bass) and Sam Teather (drums), comes from Canterbury, which belongs to the county of Kent. The diverse outlook is also reflected in Toyko Team Room’s synth-pop sounds-dominant music.
The dream-pop band is good at it, this melding of melodic bass, hypnotic guitars and dreamy synthesizers, as well as the equally dreamy vocals. All these ingredients add up to a unique sound with an utterly soulful personality. Tokyo Tea Room is probably also the most successful band to emerge from Canterbury in recent years, mainly because of their unique, hazy psychedelic indie music, with which they have caused a sensation all over England.
Bandmember Daniel Elliott has been writing, recording and producing with the band for years behind the walls of his studio “Roswell Recordings”. The band became known, among other things, through their performance on the BBC series “Introducing”. Between 2019 and 2021, the dreampop band was signed to A Certain Kind Records. In 2019, they released their first EP “Dream Room” with a total of four songs, “Designer”, “Forever out of Time”, “Things are Changing” and “Always Tomorrow”, which were all released as singles. In between the second EP titled “No Future Plans”, which was released in December 2022, there were two more singles “Half the Man” from 202o and “It’s Me & You” in 2022. “If you love her” and “Eat you alive”, are the names of the two latest works from the second EP, which they released on “Nice Guys Records”.
