Spotify is protecting artists with new AI rules against fake uploads and deepfakes.
The AI revolution in music is in full swing. But while artificial intelligence is a creative tool for some, it has become a problem for others: fake uploads, voice imitations and generic AI tracks are flooding the streaming platforms. However, Spotify is responding and is strengthening artists’ rights against AI abuse with new safeguards.
AI in music: an opportunity or a risk?
AI in music production is changing how music is created. From text generators to AI vocals to complete productions, creatives are using the tools to experiment, visualise and work faster. But at the same time, the proportion of content that has been created automatically or even fraudulently is growing. Independent artists whose names or songs are being imitated and published without consent are particularly affected.
Spotify wants to change that and has therefore introduced new AI policies that aim to curb AI abuse without inhibiting innovation.
75 million fake uploads deleted
In 2025 alone, Spotify has already removed more than 75 million AI-generated fake uploads, according to its own data. These fake uploads were mostly generated using automated tools to manipulate the royalty system. A new algorithm for finding AI music will detect suspicious content before it ends up in playlists, feeds or radio recommendations. This is meant to give artists what they are entitled to: real plays, real fans and fair royalties – free of AI spam or fake streams.
Protection against AI deepfakes and identity theft
Another focus is the protection of artistic identity. AI generations that sound deceptively similar to well-known artists are appearing more frequently – without their approval. Spotify is therefore tightening its AI guidelines and now offers a faster way to report such cases.
Anyone affected can file an objection directly via the Legal Form (“Publicity / Likeness”) – for example in the case of voice copying or unauthorised releases.

Transparency obligation for AI music
Also new is the plan to make AI use visible in song credits in the future. This means that artists and labels should indicate whether and to what extent AI was used in a song – e.g. for vocals, instruments or post-production.
The goal of Spotify AI updates is to increase transparency: the listener should be able to work out how authentic a track is and exactly who – or what – actually went into making it.
