Our Artist of the Month Anna Ullrich creates fluid boundaries between techno and trance

Our Artist of the Month for January is Anna Ullrich. It is thanks to her unique allure that Anna can appeal to so many people without ever saying a word. The DJ from Vienna, who just celebrated her 10^th anniversary behind the decks, has many talents. One of which is her ability to capture sounds and radiate them with expression.

With over 50,000 monthly listeners on Spotify, Anna Ullrich is making waves in the European electronic music scene with her electrifying solo techno-trance sets. Known for her mix of deep techno and melodic trance, Anna creates powerful, haunting experiences that captivate her audience. Originally a photographer who captured DJs behind the lens, she has now taken her place behind the decks and puts on performances in iconic venues such as the Wiener Grelle Forelle and the Berlin Sisyphos. With her dynamic sound and captivating live energy, she is an artist who continues to push the boundaries of techno and trance.

It all started 10 years ago with the keys to the club “Sass”

It all started innocently, for our Artist of the Month for January. At parties, Anna Ullrich was always the go-to girl for making music for everyone else. She was so well received that people asked again and again whether she wanted to become a DJ ‘for real’. Anna’s best friend was already a DJ who organised events at Sass, a Viennese club, and who recognised the potential that Anna had. He ultimately taught her how to DJ. A stroke of luck. Another fortunate circumstance was that Anna was able to practice undisturbed at Sass. During weekdays, Sass was opened for Anna. This allowed her to practice undisturbed and become more professional in a “real” atmosphere.

Her best friend gave her one month to practice before he booked her as DJ for his birthday – he didn’t hesitate for a moment. This first performance was so well received that Anna soon got her own event at Sass, the “Doll’s House”. Shortly afterwards she played the event at a number of venues throughout Austria.

The “Doll’s House” series was – as the name suggests – about “house” music, albeit it tended to be a bit more heavy. Let’s call it hearty techno, spiced up with a melodic, house-like groove. But Anna doesn’t just have club appearances on her CV. She has also provided top atmospheres at festivals such as the Summer of Love, the Electric Love, the Graz Springfestival and the Rainbow Parade.

After several sensational sets in the best clubs in Vienna, such as Pratersauna, Flex, Sass, Kantine and Horst, Anna Ullrich is now increasingly popular outside Austria: Berlin Sisyphos, Weekend, Cosmonaut, Suicide Circus, Zurich, Bratislava and Brno have already been rocked. Wherever she plays her sophisticated sets Anna Ullrich proves that the overused word “vibe” is not a cliche.

Exil, Sturmwarnung and Tunnel [Exile, Storm Warning and Tunnel]

These are some of Anna’s singles that she has released since 2023. Anna Ullrich has released 8 singles so far; thus she has managed to be “more” than just a DJ – she is an artist who releases her own music. The single “Frei Sein” [“Be Free”] started things off in 2023. Anna Ullrich released her latest single “Exil” [“Exile”] in December 2024. We are curious as to when the DJ and young mother will release an album.

10 years ago at the start of her career, Anna was alone among men. Now the scene has changed and Anna is no longer alone. Through her pioneering role and success, she has become a role model and veteran for future talent. That’s why from time to time she gives DJ workshops for young girls who want to follow in her footsteps. The workshop aims to ensure that there is equality in the DJ scene. And that in the end, lots of girls are more motivated and daring enough to become DJs. The big goal behind Anna’s music is to make people happy. As she says:
